FULL DESCRIPTION
Parisian covered passages, emblems of a romantic and vivacious Paris, have a rich and fascinating history dating back to the early 19ᵉ century.
Emerging as architectural responses to the needs of a changing society and a capricious climate, these passages quickly captured the hearts of Parisians and visitors alike.
Paris’s first covered passageway, the Passage des Panoramas, opened in 1799. Others soon followed, including:
– Le Passage des Princes
– Le Passage Jouffroy
with their cobbled alleys, elegant shop windows and attractive boutiques.
These shopping arcades, adorned with wrought-iron stained-glass windows and often richly decorated, became places for Parisian high society to meet, stroll and shop.
During the 19ᵉ century, covered passages multiplied throughout the city, reaching a number of nearly 150 at their peak. They housed cafés, bookshops, fashion boutiques, artists’ studios and theaters; providing an elegant refuge for strollers from the wealthy and middle classes, as well as bohemian artists and writers.
However, with the advent of department stores at the turn of the century, they began to decline in popularity. Many were abandoned, neglected or demolished over time, victims of the city’s economic and urbanistic changes.
Despite this, some passages survived, preserving their former charm and becoming popular tourist destinations. Today, Parisian covered passages such as
– Le Passage Verdeau
– Le Passage des Panoramas
continue to captivate visitors with their historic atmosphere and eclectic mix of boutiques, cafés and curiosities.
They bear witness to a bygone era while remaining living jewels in the history and soul of Paris.
