FULL DESCRIPTION
The Opéra Garnier (or Palais Garnier) is an iconic Paris landmark, on a par with Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. It is known the world over as the setting for the book Le Fantôme de l’Opéra. The Paris Opera, undoubtedly the most beautiful opera house in the world, is rich in history. Take a self-guided tour of this institution of opera and dance.
An imperial marble staircase leads to the Grand Foyer. Follow in the footsteps of the aristocratic guests of yesteryear and begin your tour of the Opéra Garnier!
Charles Garnier designed the opera house for Emperor Napoleon III, but its construction was delayed by an abnormally high water table. The problem was solved by building a series of cisterns to redistribute the water. Thus was born the legend of a strange underground lake beneath the Opéra Garnier. Tourists don’t have access to the waters of the Phantom’s lair, but given the turn of events narrated in Leroux’s novel, perhaps it’s for the best.
However, there are still many nooks and crannies to explore in one of the world’s greatest opera houses. Let yourself be carried away by the façade, with its pink marble columns, Baroque statues and sculpted friezes. And take a tour of the temporary exhibitions to make the most of your ticket to the Opéra Garnier!
INCLUDES
- Entrance to the Palais Garnier
- Access to temporary exhibitions
